Our History

since 1904

At St. Patrick Cemetery, we have a rich heritage rooted in the historic pioneer community of Midnapore, Calgary. Built in 1904, St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, the oldest surviving Catholic church in Calgary, holds a significant place in the city’s religious development. Declared a Provincial Historic Resource by the Government of Alberta in 2001, it stands as a testament to the dedication and resilience of its builders.

Resting Place of Calgary’s Historical Figures

St. Patrick Cemetery is the final resting place of notable individuals who have played an influential role in shaping Calgary’s history. One such figure is James McKevitt, born in 1862 at Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, Ireland, and passed away in 1930 in Midnapore, Alberta. James, together with his wife Julia Agatha Kiely, established their roots in Calgary. Their farm, affectionately named ‘Shamrock Hill,’ became a symbol of their enduring spirit and contributions to the community. The McKevitts left a lasting impact, with twelve children born from their union.

A Pioneer Missionary's Legacy

St. Patrick’s Church had the privilege of being ministered by the renowned Father Albert Lacombe from 1909 until his death in 1916. Father Lacombe, a pioneer missionary, played a significant role in building churches, schools, and care homes in Alberta, serving both native communities and settlers. To this day, part of the Lacombe Home, constructed by Father Lacombe, stands as a testament to his remarkable contributions.

Revival and Restoration

Over the years, St. Patrick's Church and its surrounding cemetery faced periods of abandonment, neglect, and vandalism. However, through dedication and community support, the church underwent a miraculous revival and restoration, reclaiming its former glory. Since 2012, the parish of St. John Chrysostom Church has owned the land and structures, leading the reparation and renovation efforts.
